Although a first time DUI is a misdemeanor charge, it is perhaps the harshest punishment of any misdemeanor charge. The Government has established a minimum mandatory sentence for a DUI which includes a mandatory adjudication of guilt six months' of probation, DUI school, a Victim Awareness Program, alcohol treatment, a mandatory vehicle impoundment, community service hours, a hefty fine, and not the least of the punishment is a six month driver's license suspension. Moreover, a DUI conviction stays on your record forever.

If you are charged with a DUI, you must know that you should immediately consult with an attorney. In order to challenge the suspension of your driving privilege, you must request a formal hearing from the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. This must be done very quickly after your arrest; otherwise, you may lose your right to challenge the suspension.
