The State of Florida generally defines a felony offense as any offense where you can be locked up in prison for a year or more. Below are some of the general categories of felony offenses that may be helpful to you.

Third Degree Felony: If you commit a third degree felony, you face a maximum of five years in prison and up to $5,000 in fines.

Second Degree Felony: If you commit a second degree felony, you face a maximum of 15 years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines.

First Degree Felony: If you commit a first degree felony, you face a maximum of 30 years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines.

Life Felony: If you are convicted of a life felony you face a maximum of 40 years to life in prison and up to $15,000 in fines.

Capital Felony: If you are convicted of a capital felony, you face capital punishment or life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Minimum Mandatory Sentences

Many felonies charges also carry minimum mandatory sentences. We are all familiar with the "10 – 20 – Law" minimum mandatory sentences for crimes committed with firearms. Yet, there are many, many more minimum mandatory sentences hidden in the Florida Statutes. The number grows each year as the State Legislature continues to blindly push their "tough on crime" agendas. Is there a minimum mandatory sentence with the crime you've been charged with? Contact The Law Offices of Alexander Dombrowsky and let his expertise guide you through the maze of felonies and minimum mandatory sentences.

Prison Releasee Reoffender Sentences

Since the late 1990's, if you have been released from prison and commit a violent offense within the statutory time period, you are subject to the Prison Releasee Reoffender Act. The PRR Act may force the judge to sentence you to the statutory maximum amount of time for your charge without any time off for good behavior.

Habitual Felony Offender, Habitual Traffic Offender, Habitual Violent Felony Offender

If you fit into any of these designations, you could be subject to enhanced penalties and minimum mandatory sentences. It is important to know where you stand.
